Literacy Development

We are developing our literacy skills through using the book corner, mark-making shed, message centre within our provision, there are also lots of opportunities to write, read and spot sounds that we recognise throughout our classroom both inside and outside. Literacy is taught through phonics, text detectives, topic, handwriting and story time. We follow Mckie Mastery to support our phonics and literacy.

Literacy is spilt up into three aspects 'word reading', 'comprehension' and 'writing'. Your child will be assessed against the following criteria at the end of the year.

Word Reading

  • I can say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs
  • I can read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending
  • I can read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge including some common exception words

Comprehension

  • I can demonstrate my understanding of what has been read to me by retelling stories and narratives using my own words and recently introduced vocabulary
  • I can anticipate key events in stories
  • I can use and understand recently introduced vocabulary during discussions about stories, non-fiction books, rhymes, poems and role play.

Writing

  • I can write recognisable letters, most of which are correctly formed
  • I can spell words by identifying sounds in them and representing the sounds with a letter or letters
  • I can write simple phrases and sentences that can be read to others.
